I don’t think there’s a real shortage of female singer-songwriters in the music world today, but if anyone deserves to break through, it’s the hard working and supremely talented Kathleen Edwards. I’ve been a casual fan of hers over the past few albums, but this new single “Change The Sheets” from the upcoming Voyageur album really impressed me. Looking forward to this new album and excited to see where it takes her. Enjoy: continue reading...
M83’s new album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming is getting a lot of love on all the year-end lists (which reminds me, stay tuned for SoundMojo’s Top 20 albums of 2011) and the song that seems to resonate the most with people is “Midnight City”. One listen to the gigantic cascading vocal samples and exhilirating synths and you’ll quickly understand why. Enjoy: continue reading...
Plants and Animals have just recently announced a new album titled The End Of That and the first taste is a new single called “Lightshow”. In a nutshell, it’s everything I like about Plants and Animals. I suppose that’s both good and bad. It’s a good song, but at some point I could use a little variation in their sound. Then again, it’s only a single… and like I said, it’s a good song. Ok, I’ll stop, just give it a listen, continue reading...
Tennis is a husband and wife duo who’s backstory is just as interesting as their music. I was initially turned off by the name (Tennis? Come on…), but after one listen to the new single, “Origins”, I was sold. The song has a charmingly retro feel that skips along with perky piano stabs, but it’s Alaina Moore’s fantastic vocals that really power the song. Tennis’ 2nd album is called Young & Old and will be released February 14th, 2012. Until then you’ll have to play ”Origins” over and over again. Enjoy: continue reading...
I recently went to see a band who were opening up for Yukon Blonde and admittedly didn’t know anything about the headliners. Boy, did they ever convert me into a fan quickly. continue reading...

It took me a while to realize it, but spaced out alt-country might be my favorite genre of music. Megafaun’s previous claim to fame was that they were bandmates of one Bon Iver before he was Bon Iver in a band called DeYarmond Edison. After the split with Justin Vernon the band decided to carry on as Megafaun and have released 3 albums that have mostly flown under the radar. 2011’s self-titled Megafaun doesn’t appear to be following the same trend. Critics have been generous to the album and after a few listens to the varied sounds, harmonies and decidedly spacey re-imagining of Folk, it’s easy to see why. The song I chose is “State/Meant” which features simple strumming, lazy banjo plucking and very pleasing vocals. Enjoy: continue reading...

What do you know… the week that I feature PJ in the Live Flashback and see the band perform, they also release a new MP3 for the internet to enjoy. Best band ever? Yes. The song is called “Ole” and was recorded in honor of the bands 20th anniversary which is being celebrated in a variety of ways. It’s a fun tune. Twenty years along and Pearl Jam can still rock harder than anyone. Enjoy it loudly: continue reading...
