exile-on-main-street-the-rolling-stones.JPG

The last time I featured the Stones in the Live Flashback I was in the middle of reading Keith Richards’ autobiography.  Well, this time I’m in the middle of the Mick Jagger biography (admittedly not as good, but still super interesting) and I’m once again all jacked up on the Rolling Stones.  The near perfect 4 album run from 1967’s Beggars Banquet to 1972’s Exile On Main Street continues to blow my mind and I decided I’d feature an amazing performance of the tune “Happy” from Exile.  There’s something special about the shared vocals on this song.  It’s so clearly a Keith dominated tune, but Jagger is absolutely essential to it working as a whole.   Watching them perform it in 1972 is near transcendent (alternatively a drugged out 1975 performance of the same tune is shocking).  Enjoy: continue reading...

Rock and Roll Circus was a 1968 concert created by The Rolling Stones to be released as a film on the BBC.  They invited many friends and musicians to perform and Mick Jagger hoped it would branch out a bit from typical concerts and musical performances at that time.   In the end, the film was never aired and the reason the Stones gave was that they weren’t happy with their performance.  The real story, as legend would have it, is that they were straight up upstaged by the well oiled touring machine that was The Who.   Well, Rock and Roll Circus was finally released in 1996 and there’s no denying the power and tightness of The Who’s performance.  continue reading...

let-it-bleed.jpg

I’m right in the middle of Keith Richards’ biography Life and I must say it is an absolutely incredible read.  Sure the stories about drugs and women and getting arrested are bafflingly insane, but strip all of that away and all that’s left is the music and a reminder of how incredible it was.   At this point Richards and Jagger have really become caricatures of themselves and rockstars in general, but the truth is that they fucking invented “being a rockstar”.  The golden era of the Stones remains, at least to me, the period of 1968 to 1972 where Richards was literally re-inventing how the guitar was played in Rock and Roll music.  Smack in the middle was the 1969 release of Let It Bleed which features my all time favorite Rolling Stones song, “Gimme Shelter”.  Here is the band, back when they truly were the baddest band in the world, performing that song in Texas: continue reading...
