Broken Bells is a new band made up of James Mercer from The Shins and Producer/Jedi Danger Mouse.  It seems like an odd combination when you factor in some of Danger Mouse’s previous collaborations such as his work with Gorillaz, Gnarls Barkley and MF Doom to name a few, but he’s also produced an album for the Black Keys and has proved that he’s adept at adapting his talents to a huge variety of musical styles.  For any fan of The Shins, Mercer’s voice is instantly recognizable in the lead single “The High Road” and his vocals drive the song forward, but Danger Mouses finger prints are definitely all over production highlighted by the bleepy electronic sounds and steady beats.  The collaboration is an interesting one and apparently arose due to the fact that each artist was a fan of the other. I’m curious to see if they will move beyond this initial album.  Check out the single, continue reading...

Raul Midón - who critics have compared to Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, and Donny Hathaway - may be the most compelling “triple threat” to come along in years - a show-stopping guitarist, brilliant pop/soul/jazz vocalist, and a remarkable, outspoken songwriting talent.

Midón’s brilliance in all three areas is on vivid display on his third album, ‘Synthesis’ (April 13/Decca), recorded by legendary producer and bassist Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock) with some of L.A.’s finest musicians. The album features eleven new songs, including ten Midon originals and a stunning cover of The Beatles’ “Blackbird.” continue reading...

If Behemoth frontman Nergal gets convicted he could actually get up to 2 years in jail for “insulting Catholics”… hmm, interesting law. I suppose these are the risks you run when you’re a Blackened Death Metal band.  Read more about the incident below from ChartAttack and check out an interview WatchMojo recently did with the band: continue reading...

Kevin Hammond Press Photo
Most kids grow up amusing themselves with G.I. Joes, Tonka Trucks and Sunday morning cartoons. Kevin Hammond, however, was raised in a household of musical instruments. He taught himself guitar as a child and began to hone his songwriting abilities as a teenager. Unsatisfied with his life in retail sales, Hammond quit his day job, traded in his car for a van, and became a musical nomad. The committed leap-of-faith was enough to garner the attention of New York’s A&M/Octone Records which has Hammond’s debut album slated for release this fall. The album’s lead single, “Broken Down,” showcases Hammond’s distinctive ability to bounce between feathery falsetto and full-bodied modal register. The captivating contrast is both addictive and sure to distinguish Hammond from the pack. It is a mixture of unique talent, hard work, and dedication which has poised Hammond to be America’s next breakout singer-songwriter and yet another world-class artist in a string of A&M/Octone successes.

A million people to a music festival! That’s pretty ambitious… I mean the the SARS event in 2003 had a whopping 450,000 people and that set records.  I supposed it’s a multi-day event and they get enough big name draw’s it is possible, but these Woodstock guys better have a few aces up their sleeve’s!  Read more from the Globe and Mail:

Whether rock music can actually change the world remains open for debate, but the team planning the largest music festival in Toronto’s history might actually have the credentials to put it to rest. continue reading...

Last year’s In & Out Of Control [Vice Music] found The Raveonettes pulling together all of the disparate sounds they’ve mastered over their decade-spanning career. From bubblegum pop and sinister noir rock, to fuzzed out noise and throbbing dance music, Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo compiled it all on their fourth LP.  But despite the album’s nomadic heart, the Raves’ true sweet spot has always been the ringing, reverbed guitars and slicked back melodies that make album standout “Heart of Stone” such a pleaser. Picking up where they left off on 2008’s “Black / White” collaboration, the band recently reunited with Blind to create a video deserving of the track. continue reading...
