I just recently found out that Urge Overkill has reformed, recorded a new album and are in the middle of a tour?! Despite not having original drummer Blackie Onassis (who was amazing) with them, this is still great news. These guys were the biggest rock stars that you’ve probably never heard of. Well, you probably heard their cover of “Girl You’ll Be A Woman Soon” from the Pulp Fiction soundtrack, but the rest of their original catalog is pretty spectacular. The new album is called Rock And Roll Submarine and is available now, but I’ll reserve any judgement on the new music until after I’ve given it a thorough listen. Based on the fact that grunge was all the rage in 1994, the Counting Crows should never have even had a chance of being popular. How could a band obsessed with Van Morrison, Bruce Springsteen and The Band compete with the likes of Nirvana and Pearl Jam? It turns out that the angst and passion that fueled those bands was not limited to one genre and it didn’t hurt that Counting Crows had a debut album bursting with amazing songs and a live show that could compete with anyone. The Crows may have lost a little bit of the edge that they once had, but any proof that you may need to convince you of their once mighty power is evident in this video of them performing “Round Here” in 1994.
