Today the White Stripes announced that they will no longer continue to record or perform music as a band.  This isn’t entirely shocking… in the past few years the band has been pretty quiet and at one point Meg White even had to take a break due to anxiety, but it’s still quite sad.   They were a truly unique voice in the mainstream musical landscape and one of the more consistantly creative bands around.  Some will argue that Jack White was the driving force behind the band, and he definitely was, but there was something special about the music that Jack and Meg made together and I’ll miss it.  I’m also extremely bummed I never got to see them perform live.  I always assumed I’d catch them the next time they came through… never do that.  Below is the statement from the band and below that is my favorite White Stripes song.   Thanks for the tunes Jack and Meg! continue reading...

conan and jack white

Thank god Conan is back on television.  For his first show back he invited his buddy Jack White to perform a song that they recorded over the summer together called “20 Flight Rock” originally performed by Eddie Cochran.  If Jack White is the coolest person in the world then I’d say that Conan is a pretty close second.   This is a great performance: continue reading...

When I first heard that Jack White’s wife Karen Elson (primary occupation: model) was making an album I scoffed and filed it under “do not listen”.  I should have known better… pretty much everything Jack White touches turns to gold.  Including his musical protege of a wife.   Granted this debut album The Ghost Who Walks was produced by Jack and features Jack on drums, and yet Elson has still managed to carve out a spot in the busy female alt-country/roots/folk niche.  Her songs are spooky and memorable and her dark and rich vocals stand out as a highlight.  The first single is the title track “The Ghost Who Walks” and it should give you an idea of her sound and banish any thoughts of this being a vanity, wife-of-rockstar side project.  Enjoy: continue reading...

In 2007 Jack and Meg hit the road for an extensive cross Canada tour that included every province and territory in the country.  Thankfully they documented the entire thing with a film crew and will be releasing it as the documentary entitled The White Stripes Under The Great White Northern Lights.  Along the way the band played a number of unannounced, intimate gigs at surprise locations which are sure to be highlights of what looks like an already great movie.  Check out the trailer: continue reading...

This is a pretty cool song, and the video does it justice.  It also makes me really excited for the new Bond Movie!  The song is called “Another Way To Die”.  Things to watch out for,  Jack ripping on the drums, Jack pointing his guitar like a machine gun, Alicia looking hot the entire time… Enjoy: continue reading...

I actually have a cool story about some friends of mine being in a recording studio down south and seeing Jack and Alicia hard at work on this song… but that’s a whole other story. The tune is called “Another Way To Die” and its pretty rocking and the alternating vocals go pretty well with each other. I’d love to hear some more collaboration between these two… check it out: continue reading...

This was New Years Eve 2004… They start off with a nice tune called “We’re going to be Friends” and then they do the countdown to New Years and launch into “Seven Nation Army”… the place goes mental. This is what I want to do for the next New Years Eve: continue reading...

Jack White and his buddies are back with a new Raconteurs album and if its every bit as rocking as this first single we are in for a good one. This video uses the old “still shot” as a moving picture technique to great effect as the band seem to be rocking out in jagged, herky jerky motions, just as any good band should:
