Band of Skulls are a relatively new band with just their 2009 debut Baby Darling Doll Face Honey as a point of reference and one single, “I Know What I Am” that made a little bit of noise, and yet it was enough for me to want to find out more. The band has a bluesy, garage-y sound that’s been done a million times, but often works here thanks to interesting songs and fresh boy/girl vocals sharing. The single was catchy enough, but what really sold me on the band is the slow burning final song on the album “Cold Fame”. It opens up with warm guitar and bass sounds and builds its way to rocking conclusion with a soulfully repetitive refrain. It also helps to play this song really loud… no idea why.
