Rarely do I hear a song that is immediately this catchy… and I mean good catchy, not annoying catchy.  This is the kind of song that will take a band places.  Foster The People is a young band from LA with nothing more than a self-titled EP to their name, but I expect you’ll be hearing a lot more about them in the near future.  I haven’t yet had the chance to dig into any of their other tunes, but I will soon.  In the meantime “Pumped Up Kicks” should do the trick.  Don’t say I didn’t warn you… continue reading...

The War On Drugs‘ 2008 debut album Wagonwheel Blues was one of the more unexpected highlights of the past few years of new music for me.  It combined a strange mix of Bob Dylan-y vocals and atmospheric blasts of guitar fuzz for a ragged shoegaze sound, and it really did it for me.  The band is back with a new EP called Future Weather and thankfully the first tune lives up to the precendent I’ve built up in my mind.  The song is called “Comin’ Through” and I listened to it 5 times in a row once it had entered my iTunes library.  Can’t wait to hear more.  I hope you like it: continue reading...

Self-recorded in their own PA studio, Slim & Slender is the brand new 4-song EP by jubilant pop sextet The Spinto Band.  The vinyl and digital only collection, out this week via Park The Van, gives us a little taste of what we can expect from the band’s next LP, also self-recorded, which is due out in 2010. Possibly some of the band’s best material yet, Slim & Slender includes extended instrumental explorations and a bouncy cover of the theme from Terry Gilliam’s Brazil. continue reading...

Coldplay have a brand new video for the song “Life In Technicolor II”, which is off their new EP titled Prospekts March.  It’s essentially the same song as the lead track from Viva La Vida, but they’ve added words and lengthened it a bit. In any case, the video is hilarious and worth a look to see Chris Martin dance around in Puppet-form: continue reading...

The Ying Yang Twins are getting into the holiday spirit with a new Christmas themed EP, The Ying and the Yang of the Holidays, out now through Deep Records. The EP finds the twins striking a Bing Crosby-esque pose and caroling listeners with medleys of traditional Christmas songs with a Ying Yang Twins twist. On “Sleigh Ride” D-Rock and Kaine drink eggnog and smoke blunts while making a Christmas wish for peace in the hood and giving President elect Barack Obama a shout out. “This Christmas” is a soulful take on a holiday classic, and “Deck Da Club” and “Carol of Da Bellz” are quintessential Ying Yang Twins. continue reading...
