viva-brother.jpg

Right off the bat Viva Brother is a bit suspect considering all the hype that the UK music press dumped on them before they’d even released a debut.  Then when you consider that every piece written about them references the fact that they sound exactly like Blur and Oasis and that the band falls under a new category called “gritpop”(presumably a grittier version of Britpop…), you might be a bit hesitant.  At least I was.  Then I heard the song “Darling Buds of May” and was pleasantly surprised.  Sure there are shades of Albarn and the Gallagher brothers, but who cares if the song is good?  continue reading...

Lately I’ve been going back through the Supergrass catalog and it reminded of how great of a band they were.  One of their first big tunes was “Alright” from the 1995 album I Should Coco and I thought that I’d highlight the Glastonbury performance of that song from the same year.   It’s really a shame the band broke up… rarely are bands as consistant as Supergrass and I saw them on their final tour through North America and they still had the same energy in their live performance.  Enjoy: continue reading...

After the bands guitarist, Graham Coxon, left during the recording of their last album Think Tank things have been pretty stagnant for Blur.   Think Tank received mixed reviews and the band essentially broke up, or went on hiatus, or whatever it is bands call it these days.  Damon Albarn then went on to have incredible success with his cartoon band Gorillaz and it seemed as if Blur was done for good. continue reading...

supergrass

What a bummer… Supergrass has been one of the most consistently enjoyable bands over the last 15 years or so and I’ll be sad to see the musicians stop making music together.  They flirted with fame, almost had a “Monkees style” show, and almost lost their bassist after he sleep-walked out of a 2nd story window… in the end it comes down to the old stand-by, creative differences.  Read more from NME and enjoy a couple of my favorite Supergrass tunes: continue reading...

Supergrass are back with an all new album called “Diamond Hoo Ha” and hopefully this is the album that brings these guys some respect in North America. They’ve never released a bad album and their live show is something to be cherished, but they can also release a mean music video. The video for “Bad Blood”, the second single off of Diamond Hoo Ha is no exception. With wild camera movements mimicking the movements of objects on the screen, this clip with make your head spin (kind of like the intro). Check this video out and show some love for Supergrass, they sure deserve it:
