A casual music fan will probably be aware of Spoon, but most likely be unaware of their earliest albums.  Which is fine.  Most bands expand their sound over time and appeal to a broader audience.  Completely normal.  One cool thing is that when someone actually decides that they like a band and wants to dig into the back catalog, there’s usually lots of exciting music to be found from a band still finding its way.  This is very true of Spoon.  Their first two albums sound quite different from their later albums, showcasing tight and explosive guitar driven tunes that owe a lot to bands like Husker Du and Wire.  continue reading...

Formed after the tragic death of legendary guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan, the recently reunited Arc Angels are set to perform at New York City’s Fillmore Theater at Irving Plaza on Friday, May 8th.

After much speculation in the fan and music communities, the Arc Angels have announced today an official reunion that will include new music and new touring ventures, along with their first major concert as part of Austin’s South By Southwest Festival on Friday, March 20th at 8pm at Auditorium Shores. The eagerly anticipated reunion features original band members Charlie Sexton, Doyle Bramhall II and Chris Layton performing together again. After more than a decade apart, the band has entered the studio to record new music, is slated to open for Eric Clapton on his Spring UK tour, and will release a Live CD/DVD with a U.S. summer tour to follow. If you’re not already aware that Spoon is the greatest band in the world, then this song, “The Underdog” and their new album “Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga” will easily convince you.  The video is a unique take on the recycled idea of the “band playing in the studio”, incorporating a Scorcese styled steady cam that follows a weird cast of characters who don’t seem to have much to do with the band.  You’ll spend half the time trying to figure out what is going on and the other half commenting to yourself how awesome the song is… seriously. Check out the video below and then go check out ”Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga” (man thats almost as annoying to type as it is to say… but I forgive you Spoon):
