I’ve only recently discovered this English band, but I’m quickly being converted into a fan. Mystery Jets have released 3 albums prior to 2010’s Serotonin and all 3 have been critically acclaimed and well received back in England. An English friend of mine recently recommended them as a band I’d probably enjoy and quite soon after I stumbled across the title track of the new album. It has a ridiculously catchy synth line and whisper-y verses that hooked me immediately. Not to mention a chorus that I can’t stop humming in my head… According to Wikipedia, “serotonin” is a hormone in the human body that is “a well-known contributor to feelings of well-being”. This all seems to be falling into place… I think I’m getting it. I guess it’s time for me to dig into their back catalog. Enjoy: continue reading...
No problem, all you need is to put aside 17 months of your life and learn how to do everything from molding to electrical circuitry… Now, I love Daft Punk, but that seems like a looooot of work. Click here for the step by step guide and watch the video below for an idea of the work that goes into it. Incredible: continue reading...
If you live anywhere in North Eastern North America then you should highly consider heading to Montreal for the weekend (Jul. 31st - Aug. 1st) to catch 2010’s version of the Osheaga Music Festival. There aren’t a lot of options in regards to large scale music festivals in the North East and after 5 years Osheaga really seems to be hitting its stride. The lineup is stacked with talent and is incredibly varied. My top 5 recommendations for must-see bands include: continue reading...
Yet another festival that takes advantage of Montreal’s short but fun-filled summer is the Osheaga Music and Arts Festival. A two-day mélange of indie/hipster goodness and enough mainstream acts to attract the masses, the festival boasts the relaxed atmosphere you might expect. continue reading...
This was exactly how the Flaming Lips started the show that I saw them perform at. This particular performance is at the 2008 Motorokr Fest in Guadalajara, but it should give you a general idea of the insanity that is a Flaming Lips concert. The first 3 minutes of this clip involves lead singer Wayne Coyne crowd-walking while inside of a giant inflated ball, so if you want jump to the actual performance of “Race For The Prize” skip ahead to 3:40… but trust me, the crowd-walk is pretty awesome, plus don’t forget the 2 groups of dancing tele-tubbies, balloon drop and giant confetti shower! Go see this band if you have the chance, enjoy: continue reading...
Hailing from Gainesville, Florida, Against Me! is a punk rock band formed in 1997. Despite claims by the band that no one liked them early in their career, they kept at it and finally signed to a big label in 2005. They’ve lost and added members, matured (somewhat), and evolved into a powerhouse in the genre. In fact, by 2008 Rolling Stone magazine had named them Best Punk Band. In this series of 3 clips, http://www.WatchMojo.com chats with bassist Andrew Seward to learn more about the band’s origins, evolution, influences and their new album White Crosses, continue reading...
Band of Skulls are a relatively new band with just their 2009 debut Baby Darling Doll Face Honey as a point of reference and one single, “I Know What I Am” that made a little bit of noise, and yet it was enough for me to want to find out more. The band has a bluesy, garage-y sound that’s been done a million times, but often works here thanks to interesting songs and fresh boy/girl vocals sharing. The single was catchy enough, but what really sold me on the band is the slow burning final song on the album “Cold Fame”. It opens up with warm guitar and bass sounds and builds its way to rocking conclusion with a soulfully repetitive refrain. It also helps to play this song really loud… no idea why. Enjoy: continue reading...
The Arcade Fire have just announced that they will be live streaming their August 5th performance at Madison Square Garden on YouTube. The Suburbs is due to be released on August 3rd and everyone is very excited. You can also catch some of the new tune “Rococo” in the promo below: continue reading...
I could have taken any performance from The Last Waltz, but this one with Van Morrison always stands out in my mind as unforgettable. Van is on fire with his vocals and is more animated than usual in his performance and The Band is incredible as always. I won’t say too much more about the performance, but what it really comes down to is that The Last Waltz is the greatest concert DVD ever put to film. Not only does it capture a band at its peak performing for the last time, but it captures an entire generation and era of music. The ‘zeitgeist’ if you will. Plus having Martin Scorsese directing things makes it real pretty to look at. Do yourself a favor and watch the entire concert sometime. Until then, here’s Van Morrison singing “Caravan” backed up by The Band: continue reading...
After the disaster that was the G20 summit in Toronto a lot of people were left looking for answers. Protesting, anarchy, police brutality, violence… it was all there and on display immediately thanks to the power of Twitter and YouTube. Broken Social Scene were anonymously sent a mash-up of video and images set to the soundtrack of the song “Meet me in the bathroom” from their new album Forgiveness Rock Record. It’s quite impressive, read what the band has to say and watch the clip below: continue reading...
