With a resume that spans over 20 years in the music industry, one would think that a veteran musician and ex-Dream Syndicate Frontman like Steve Wynn couldn’t learn any new tricks. Well, that idea is far from true with his newest release, Crossing Dragon Bridge.
For his eighth solo record, Steve found his inspiration in Slovenia with producer Chris Eckman. Performing the album’s guitars, bass, stylophone and lead vocals, Steve claims that this record sounds more like the sounds he hears inside of his head that anything else he has ever made before. Paying homage to his Eastern European excursion, Crossing Dragon Bridge, gives new character to a classic sound.

An interview with Sister Hazel’s very own bass player and author…
1. Where did you find inspiration to publish a book?
A couple things inspired me to turn Starfish into a Children’s book. Ever since the song has been around, our fans have told me how it has connected with their children. Also, having two kids of my own that I read to every night, I wanted to give them something special. Their own bedtime story from their Dad.
2. The illustrations look lovely. Who did you have illustrate and design Starfish?
I was at an art festival in my home town, and met Sean Kelly the illustrator. We were walking by his booth and my wife pointed out these paintings of sea creatures and said that would be perfect for the book I had been talking about. He was showing some children’s books he had just done called Sea Tails, and it turned out to be a perfect fit.
3. Along with the book, comes a CD of lullaby music?
Naturally, I had to include a music portion to this project. Ryan Newell and I had a lot of fun with this. We turned starfish into a lullaby. You know, harp, glockenspeil, violins. It turned out really cool. Ocean sounds linking the movements together. I got to test it out on my kids, and it has never left their cd player.
4. Aside from writing lullabies and getting this book together, what have you and Sister Hazel been up to recently?
We’ve been touring pretty consistently. We’re on the road about 100 days a year. We also, just started pre-production for a new studio album. Recording at the end of this month. We should be releasing it early 09.
5. Where can readers purchase a copy of Starfish, A Lullaby?
The best place is to go to is www.StarfishLullaby.com
6. A percentage of proceeds from the book sales will go to benefit Lyrics for Life. Tell us a little bit about that charity.L4L is a charity our lead singer started to benefit Stop Children’s cancer. We do special engagement shows throughout the country and auction off hand written lyrics from a wide variety of artists that donate to the cause. Check it out at www.lyrics4life.org
7. Can we look out for any other literature to be written by Jett Beres in the future?
Let’s just say I have an unreleased song called The Nautilus. Hmmm!?
8. Anything else you’d like to say about Starfish in closing?
I’m really excited to be putting this out there. I think the fans of the band and song are going to enjoy having something like this for their kids. And what better way to get the next generation of Hazelnuts started early!

It’s not often a band writes a song that strikes a chord with so many, but Plain White T’s struck gold, literally, with their hit “Hey There Delilah.” The song, with over 40 Million cumulative YouTube views, catapulted Every Second Counts to Gold Record status and the band to international stars. Now the T’s are set to return with Big Bad World, which features “1,2,3,4” a Delilah-esque love song that captures the sweet soul of Higgenson’s vocals and lyrics that will have fans dedicating the track to their loved ones.
Big Bad World will be available everywhere on September 23rd.
I don’t understand what he’s saying, but it sure does look amazing!
The Japanese blogger at Jacket Lunch Box has been recreating the covers of famous albums in food and then posting the results online.
The covers seem to combine rice, seaweed, fishcakes, sour plum and other edible ingredients to make reasonably accurate, artistic copies of the albums they’re mocking up.

Released in the spring of 1971, Graham Nash’s emotionally charged solo debut followed in the wake of a temporary split with his bandmates, David Crosby and Stephen Stills, and a permanent break with his love, Joni Mitchell. The album was a decisive hit, peaking at #15 on Billboard and spawning the Top 40 hit “Chicago.” Rhino remasters this legendary musician’s first album for a landmark CD/DVD reissue that features 5.1 Surround Sound and High Resolution mixes of the original, along with a 2008 interview with Nash, photos and lyrics. SONGS FOR BEGINNERS will be available on September 23 from Rhino Records at all physical and digital outlets, including www.rhino.com, for a suggested list price of $24.98.
With no plans to record an album, Nash says his debut was an unexpected gift. After writing several poignant songs about his break up with Mitchell (”Better Days,” “Simple Man” and “I Used To Be King”) and Still’s rocky relationship with Judy Collins (”Wounded Bird”), Nash was inspired to keep writing. “I realized I could craft something special that you could listen to and could help you in your own life,” he says. “At the time I wrote those songs, they were very hopeful. There was bleakness, but I tried to put an opening of light at the end.”
The story behind “Simple Man” is a classic. Nash wrote the song about the dissolution of his affair with Mitchell in June 1970 just a few hours before he was to take to the stage with Crosby, Stills and Young for the group’s opening-night show at the Fillmore East in New York. That evening, Nash debuted the song alone at the piano with Mitchell sitting in front of him in the audience.
Despite the gentle tone, SONGS FOR BEGINNERS is book-ended by two protest songs, the opening memoir “Military Madness” and “Chicago,” a piano-driven march on behalf of the Chicago 7, then on trial for conspiracy and inciting to riot during the violent protests at the 1968 Democratic National Convention.
Recorded in Los Angeles and San Francisco, Nash made SONGS FOR BEGINNERS with a combination of kindred souls from both cities, including Crosby, CSNY touring drummer Johnny Barbata, original Flying Burrito Brothers bassist Chris Ethridge, singer Rita Coolidge, fiddler David Lindley, the Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia and Phil Lesh, and Neil Young, who is credited on the album as “Joe Yankee.”
SONGS FOR BEGINNERS is written and performed in a conversational tone of voice, often just above a whisper. It is tender in its honesty, warm and calm in its pace and determination. “Yes, it was quiet,” Nash admits. “But I wanted it to be straight from my heart to whoever listened to it. What I’m saying has survived pretty well.”
