Grocery stores can be confusing. And grocery shopping can really be a chore. However, there are ways to make it easier, and you’ll even end up with more healthy foods in your pantry. Check out these 25 rules to follow the next time you’re in the supermarket:
- Buy fresh food!
- Shop the perimeter of the store. That’s where all the fresh foods are.
- Think of the departments (dairy, produce, meat, and so on) as separate stores within the supermarket.
- Shop with a list.
- Food-shop with a full stomach.
- Buy a few days before ripe.
- Buy in season.
- Buy organic whenever possible.
- Buy frozen fruits and vegetables, as opposed to canned.
- Stock up on canned tomato products.
- Stock up on canned beans.
- Spend some time in the condiment aisle (they can be the base for sauces, marinades and flavorings).
- Try some of the new whole grain alternatives.
- Choose prepared foods with short ingredient lists. We don’t expect you to cut out prepared foods entirely.
- Reject foods and drinks made with corn syrup.
- Look for fiber. You want at least 1 to 2 grams of fiber for every 100 calories you consume.
- If partially hydrogenated oil, or trans fats are listed on the label, step away from the box and nobody will get hurt.
- Pick up a jar of dried shiitake mushrooms.
- Whenever you find yourself reaching for a package of ground meat, switch over to the poultry section instead and pick up ground turkey, ground chicken, or soy crumbles.
- Choose strong cheeses.
- Buy macadamia nut oil.
- Confirm that a wheat bread is whole wheat.
- Buy plain yogurt and flavor it at home.
- Buy healthy add-ins for plain cereals.
- Read juice labels carefully.
