A new study from Laval University in Quebec has found that people in that Canadian province spend more on alcohol to help them sleep than on medical help and sleep aids combined.  Alcohol actually does the opposite of helping you sleep, however, by worsening symptoms of insomnia.

The study also calculates the total cost of this phenomenon to the province at CAD$6.6 billion, most of which is due to lost productivity hours.  Read more…

A detox diet usually works on the assumption that toxins build up in the body.  By cutting out unhealthy foods and beverages, and supplementing the diet with vitamin drinks, the detox diet aims to rid the body of these unwanted toxins and potential health problems.  However, dietitians are now warning that these diets are “nonsense,” and that the body was designed to naturally rid itself of toxins.  They urge there is no magic cure, and that proper hydration, diet and exercise still are the key to health.  Read more…

A new study finds that smokers may be subjecting others to toxins even when they smoke nowhere near them.  “Third-hand” smoke is the phenomenon that occurs when contamination sticks around after the cigarette is put out.  The authors of the study contend that, for example, if you smoke and then come into contact with your baby, toxins stick to your hair and clothing and are then transferred to the child.  Also, breastfeeding mothers should be aware that these same toxins are transferred through breastmilk.

It is thought the study could help lead to home smoking bans, and tobacco awareness campaigns.  Read more…
