As you may know, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Seeing as how many couples will probably want to stay in to snuggle and watch romantic movies, I thought I’d suggest the 1987 classic “The Princess Bride”.

Don’t worry, even if you’re alone this year the film will please you. Not only does the book-inspired movie tell of romance and fantasy, but has action and wild comedy to boot! As a result I think men will be just as (if not more) satisfied with the film as the ladies. Plus, this is my favorite Cary Elwes flick ever (he also starred in Robin Hood Men in Tights), and Andre the Giant plays the lovable Fezzik opposite Mandy Patinkin’s Inigo.

For those who don’t know, the plot is centered on the true love between a simple farmhand (Elwes) with a beautiful woman named Buttercup (Robin Wright). As the movie opens, Westley goes off to seek his fortune so that they may marry. However, he returns five years later only to discover that Buttercup is marrying the despicable Prince Humperdinck, as she believes Westley to be dead.

Westley, now an accomplished pirate and swordsman must get back his love. Sounds straightforward, but trust me it never goes the obvious routes. And notable, much of the comedy of the film stems from the relationship between Fezzik and Inigo. Throughout the film the pair works for a Sicilian criminal genius who wants to capture the princess to force a war with a neighboring land. But like any good flick, the duo’s motivations (particularly Inigo’s) are more complex, as he is out to get vengeance on the six fingered man who murdered his father!

Okay so usual I’ll show you all clips to demonstrate what I’m talking about…

For the ladies, here’s the romantic opening of the film:

For the guys, the classic sword fight scene with witty banter:

And for everyone, the battle of wits, enjoy!
