I guess I’m still on a Ghostbusters high after writing about Bill Murray…but I wanted to take a moment to talk about one of the many gifts 1989’s Ghostbusters II gave us.
Now, I realize that many people out there don’t think the second film in the series was all that great (Bill Murray included). However, I strongly disagree! Not only do I consider the two flicks inseparable, but in my mind they have become one film with classic standouts that make them equally worth enjoying. Among the many gifts of the second film, which include a walking statue of Liberty and dancing slime is the gift of funny paintings. Many of you may not realize this, but Ghostbusters II popularized the use of parody film art (A term I am now going to coin and copyright as “Para-Fart”)…wait a second…
Anyways…I brought some show and tell to demonstrate what I mean. The first piece of evidence is the following group painting from GB II in which the evil Vigo’s painting was comically altered to the following:
Well guess what… this use of art as a comic centerpiece spilled over to Seinfeld in the 1992 episode “The Letter”. Remember the hilarious Cosmo Kramer Painting?
And more recently this painting popped up on Stargate Atlantis in the episode “Harmony”. For those who haven’t seen the episode, you should check it out!
If you have any other examples of this in film or television, please send me a post!
