Disney’s The Princess and the Frog isn’t simply making headlines because it marks Disney’s return to traditional animation, it also marks its first African American princess. With that in mind, we look at some real-life African Americans who blazed a trail in Hollywood.
Sidney Poitier
Date of Birth: February 20, 1924
Sidney Poitier has starred the leading roles for the landmark films, To Sir With Love, Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner, and In The Heat Of The Night. All three films dealt with the racial issues of their time, and the taboo subject of interracial relationships and attraction.
He was cinema’s first strong black character that was more determined and intelligent than the whites around him.
