Today marks Roxana’s first week anniversary. Last week at this time, my wife was about halfway through the labor process.
In the next few days I will be covering the first moments after Roxana’s birth as well as her first week. On my end: I absolutely love it. I’ve decided to take some time off to spend with Roxana and my wife Christine. When our in-laws pass by, I’ll step out to run errands… more on that at a later date.
Anyway, back to the jelly bean: what’s remarkable about Roxana is that she will sleep heavily and eat frequently in the morning and afternoon… but then for the past few evenings will begin to cry from about 6pm to 10pm. She’s a doll in the morning… but by evening, it’s been a cry-fest:
One of our friends’ child had colic (non-stop crying for 4 hours on end), I am not sure if Roxana has it too… but it’s pretty common for kids within the first couple of weeks until their third month. Bear in mind, it’s totally normal for a newborn to cry 1 to 3 hours per day… but 3-4 hours in a row for no reason (she’s fed, changed, not hot or cold, etc.) is a sign she might have it.
Before it got dark - and cold - I bundled her up and took her outside on our balcony and she instantly calmed down, proof? See below.
But then it got cold and we brought her in and the crying continued…
We hesitated to do this, but since she is breastfeeding well and crying a lot, we caved in and gave her a pacifier. Think Maggie Simpson.
Depending on where you are, a pacifier is also known as a “binky or piece or noo noo or nookie (North America), dummy or comforter (Australia) or a soother (Canada, Ireland)”.
I call it guilty exhibit 1.
A nurse came to visit us last week and she said it was not a problem… but we felt guilty nonetheless. Apparently, we were not alone. See Yahoo! Answers for other parents who feel guilty about caving in as well.
More reporting from the front lines in the days, weeks and years to come… who am I kidding, make that hours to come.
Hmm… then again, she’s pretty calm now… back to being a daddy.
