With the premiere of Mad Men’s 4th season taking place last night I got to thinking: What would Don Draper drive if he were living in today’s crazy world?
Appropriately for the show, Don Draper drives a 1962 Cadillac Coupe de Ville, but if existed today, in 2010, would he choose another Caddie? Somehow I don’t think so.
Cool, calm and suave, Draper is all about being a manly man. He’s not quite perfect though, and his marriage isn’t perfect and his past is far from it as well. He’s also successful and good at his job. Draper likes to prove (just as his wife Betty) his place in society, and I’m not sure a Cadillac would show that today.
After picking up my latest test vehicle this morning, I think I figured it out; Don Draper would drive a BMW. It’s clear from the show that Draper isn’t always comfortable with his position and he often does what he does in order to maintain level with his peers at work. And his peers at work would drive BMWs.
I tried to think of a good American car that Draper could drive other than the Caddie, and I came up short.
As I drove home in my X5 xDrive35i I felt like this is the kind of car Draper would have, not only for its luxury but also because Betty would need a car to drive the kids (Sally, Bobby and Eugene Scott) around in.
Perfect.
