2011 BMW X3

And it looks exactly the same.

Usually, unveilings are something we auto journalists chomp at the bit for. We wait anxiously, looking at blurry spy shots and trying to get insider info on any design changes we can. We want to be the first to see the glorious new look, the fabulous facade changes and the overall design upgrade.

And sometimes we are sorely disappointed at the lackluster outcome of the unveiling, like this latest one from BMW.

This second generation X3 looks pretty much the same a the first. There are a few modern upgrades to the look and it’s clearly following design cues from the new 5 and 7 Series models. However, other than that it’s the same vehicle.

Technical specs have not been released yet, but it’s clear that BMW listened to the complaints about a poor interior design and they have upgraded that. They’ve even made the X3 a little larger so passengers have more head and legroom.

Which begs the questions (in my mind): Why wouldn’t those complaining about legroom just get an X5? Maybe I’m missing something here.

To me, the X3 is a bit of a waste. Especially with the 550i GT now available and the X6 as well, there’s really no place for the X3 at all. I get it, it’s an SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle), but really? And to make it so indistinguishable from the rest — shouldn’t they make it a stand-out kind of car to make people want it over the other 3 SUV-type vehicles they offer in their lineup?

But who am I? I can only hope BMW listens to my gripes one day … one day.
