It’s been a rockin’ rollin’ few weeks.  We keep setting records and judging from the preliminary mid-month report, we are on pace for our second best month ever and to be perfectly honest, our best month ever if we just push the envelope a bit.

Seeing so many deeply funded, high profile companies go bust, it’s very simple, to win in business, it doesn’t matter what your name is, what school you went, which big-name company you used to work at, who funded your company and for that matter what you did last year; you have to worry about the proverbial “six inches in front of your face” and finish your tackles, make the necessary block and reach for that extra inch, but don’t take it from me:

Fred Wilson continues his rants against… VCs.  Love it:

Over the past few months, I’ve heard countless VCs utter the words ‘we need to own’ followed by some number. Often it is 20pcnt, but it is frequently 30pcnt. I heard someone tell me about a VC yesterday who said they needed to own 44pcnt. I was tempted to ask them to give me the number to four digits.

This behavior by VCs is not productive. I’ve said this before and I will say it again. We are putting our needs before the needs of our portfolio companies and the entrepreneurs who form them.

And this “need” is just greed. We don’t need to own any specific percentage. We just want to.

Any more of this and suddenly I will have to start defending VCs.  Hmm, probably not.  More tellingly, I think in the post he admits that USV owns 10% of Twitter:

We took 10pcnt of a company a few years ago that has become our best investment. We own less than 10pcnt of it now. And we will make a ton of money on this investment, probably more than any other investment in our fund. And we own less of it than any other investment in our portfolio.

Am I crazy?  Either way, what he is saying isn’t crazy at all… VCs harm themselves when the aggressively dilute founding entrepreneurs, management and staff.  This is why you will see many zombie startups.

Humble Beginnings

In 2006 the idea for Solution Networking came to founder - Brad Greene. The idea was born as a result of years spent collecting and listening to stories about and from people who were making a positive difference through what they do; what they offered and what they were proud of - and he realized that all these solutions could benefit from a broader audience and a louder voice.

The Long Journey

Brad discussed the idea with Tony Browne and Janelle Greene and the initial findsolve team was established. For the longest time, it was just these three. Brad concentrated on cultivating the vision and the evolution of the site; Tony on the business systems and IT infrastructure and Janelle on the findsolve message, publicity and marketing.

Together the three of them, holed up and focused on building a site to support the mission: to showcase and share solutions. Solutions for business, solutions for communities, solutions for the environment - any solution big or small that has solved a challenge, taken the world forward in a small way or been the impetus for a cause of actions was of interest.

As the concept began to take shape, our Lead Developer - Bjørn Erik Lie and a small group of passionate people joined the cause to develop, design and support the site and in August 2009 findsolve went live and was announced to the world.

The Goal

Many of the solutions we need are already out there — they just need a louder voice. findsolve wants to help make that happen.

To help communities and the environment showcase the solutions to some of the hardest challenges of all — we have made it “Free to Publish” for Not for Profits and Charities.

It is our mission to showcase and share solutions and we want you to be part of our Goal.

To provide your own company’s solution, and start growing you business, join findsolve today!
