Fake Steve Jobs sat down with CNET and grant them an exclusive interview.
CNET itself asks if Fake Steve is Nick Denton… I asked what if Fake Steve was real Steve? I think it might be Nick, after all he did just hire Owen Thomas of Business 2.0 to take over Silicon Valley rag Valleywag even though Valleywag’s traffic shot up after he returned to take over the helm and he seems to be having way too much fun leading the charge.
Then, combine to that the fact that Nick, I mean, Fake Steve inked a book deal. It’s one thing to write a blog, it’s another to write a book, especially when you have to pretend to be someone else. I sort of know, having written a book pretending to be Alexander the Great. It ain’t obvious. Anyway, that last part is not shameless promo (well, it is), it’s a connection explaining why Denton is leaving the Valleywag full-time gig, so he can maybe ramp up on FSJ duties as the promotion ramps up for the release, slated for October, 2007. We’re in July, so that makes sense were Denton ramping up promotions for the book… I think. Oh, Denton’s also written a book, a pretty good one on Barings. No, I didn’t read it, but the Barings story is “pretty good”. Yes, I just saw the flick.
I know, he’s got a full-time job already as founder of Gawker Media, but think of the promotion he is generating by doing this…
Don’t get me wrong, I definitely think it’s more likely that FSJ is NOT Nick Denton than the chances that it is Nick Denton.
I’m not sure though, beyond shits and giggles and a decent advance, what he gets out of doing this. Then again, I’m not sure what I got out of writing a book as Alexander, other than it was a nice experience.
But, then again, this is PR you can’t buy…
Oh, I’m also not the first person to suggest this, Fred Wilson did too.
What’s my main reason for thinking that FSJ is Denton?
Well, nowadays, we all have to be careful about what we say, even if you’re pretending to be someone…
Yet… while FSJ has been particularly harsh about everything and everyone, I was really surprised how FSJ described Denton in this post. Who uses the term sodomite, anyway? That’s something [blatant/ignorant stereotype around the corner] that a gay guy might say to another gay guy, but most straight guys would not go there, especially if they’re
a) in the media business and
b) the target of their slur is actually helping create media buzz for them.
That’s something, maybe/I think that Denton would say about Denton posing as FSJ. Of course, maybe FSJ is not Denton after all, but the man pretending to be the iPhone-daddy is gay? Why? Because that’s much like a rapper getting away with using the N-word but you and I not being able to (unless you are a black rapper reading this, of course).
Not, of course, that there’s anything wrong with that.
Any thoughts?
