When Google launched Gmail, everyone said that unless Gmail becomes a market leader in email, its launch would be a failure and the mere move away from “search only” would become a distraction.
Not so. A year after its launch, Google is using Gmail to drive traffic to its other products:
Similarly, when Google launched Google Spreadsheets, everyone knew that it was trying to hit MSFT on its turf so push back MSFT’s attack on Google’s search unit. Not only they are doing that, but they’re upping the pressure and tactics. For the first time today, I saw that Google now allows you to automatically download and convert a MSFT Office Excel spreadsheet directly into Google Spreadsheet. That’s brilliant.
