If ever a company acquires Mojo Supreme, it might be to shut me up. Anyway, now that that is out of my system…
Today I read that YouTube is removing (this should read “continuing to remove”) copyright-violating content.
Here is my gut feeling about how Google Corp. will position YouTube vis-a-vis Google Video going forward:
It will use YouTube as the “Broadcast Yourself” platform that it has come to be. In other words, if you want to create videos in an amateur, semi-professional or professional manner and want the anything-goes viral benefits that come with online video, then check out YouTube, that’s where you need to be.
Alternatively, despite the fact that Google Video today is pretty chaotic, I envision Google’s management to leverage its technology, embedded search and payment platform to use Google Video as the online video platform for professional companies and what not.
They will certainly not remove any of the user/consumer generated content from Google Video… but you will see that between the video.google.com page and the “Video” link in Google’s search results, Google’s management will drive traffic to develop Google Video as to position it as “TV on the Web.”
And as I write this and the more I think about it, the more I think they will be able to pull it off.
The exact same way that Google paid MySpace and other FIM properties $900 million to keep it away from MSFT and Yahoo!, Google bought YouTube to keep it as is, clean it up, leave it as a place where viral video can foster, mainly, keep it out of the hands of Yahoo! and MSFT and ensure that it can roll out Video.Google.com as the way to organize the video content online.
