Google’s VP of Ad Sales Tim Armstrong tells magazine publishers that his company does not compete with them (although it does for advertising revenue).
Somewhat fitting then that Ziff Davis puts 100 back issues of Computer Gaming World online, on their web property 1up.com. I certainly commend this move, but why stop at PDFs? Just put the darn thing online. Sure, PDFs can be indexed by search engines, but reading them online is still not all that desirable an experience, is it?
I do not know of any advertiser that wants to advertise a PDF… maybe that’s why Google is annhilating your business, no?
Alas, specifically because the search engines do not do any justice to the great content in magazines, we created the MetaMojo.com best of breed vertical search engine.
Compare search results for Madrid, for example on Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask.com, and MetaMojo.com.
Not to brag (but I will), but you will see that only MetaMojo.com gets you results from National Geographic, Travel and Leisure, Fodors and other offline content creators (as opposed to someone who maintains a Madrid page from his basement since 1998 and indexes high on the other search engines, but alas)… but it also does get you all of the major online travel sources you expect - less man on basement’s webpage.
