Time Warner and former Disney Chairman and CEO Michael Eisner have plunked down $12.5M into Veoh. For more on VEOH, check out our comparison of the site with YouTube and company here.
Interesting to note that in parallel worlds, YouTube is where Friendster was in the social networking space at the early stages of the industry. Over time, a few small details here and there made MySpace the ultimate champion in the space.
Many might think it is premature to call MySpace that, arguing that social networking is still in its infancy. While social networking might be in its infancy, I personally think that days of a stand-alone social networking company are over. YouTube, Veoh and company are applying tenets of social networking into the online video space. Other companies apply social networking to search, etc.
Increasingly, many companies are rushing to integrate the principles of social networking into their digital media strategies, however, many seem to discount and overlook the inherent drawbacks and dangers that social networking presents.
It will be interesting to see how things will look back in hindsight.
