In this edition of the Flashback I’m jumping back to 1971 to a performance by a young Joe Walsh and his James Gang band.  Now known primarily for his work with The Eagles, Joe Walsh had quite a successful early career with The James Gang and as a solo artist.  There’s not much available online, but luckily this video exists and captures the power trio in a great performance of their moderate hit “Walk Away”.  There’s something special about the power trio setup.  One Guitar, one bass, drums and vocals… Not much wiggle room, especially when playing hard rock.  This band was great at it.  Enjoy: continue reading...

I don’t think there’s a real shortage of female singer-songwriters in the music world today, but if anyone deserves to break through, it’s the hard working and supremely talented Kathleen Edwards.  I’ve been a casual fan of hers over the past few albums, but this new single “Change The Sheets” from the upcoming Voyageur album really impressed me.  Looking forward to this new album and excited to see where it takes her.  Enjoy: continue reading...

In a Live Flashback double rarity I’m only flashing back one day into the past and I’m re-featuring a band I’ve already featured.  Double rare!  Anyways, The War On Drugs made their network television debut on the Jimmy Fallon show last night (01/11) and wow was it great.  Not only is “Baby Missiles” a fantastic song, but you throw in ?uestlove as a 2nd drummer and you’ve got yourself a classic performance.   Sprinkle in the fact that they’ve got a Jimmy Fallon lookalike on keyboards and it’s truely memorable.  Slave Ambient was my 2nd favorite album of 2011 and this band deserves as much attention as they can get.  Catch them on tour if you can! continue reading...

top_20_2011.jpg

So much good music was released in 2011 that it was quite difficult to narrow down my 20 favourite albums of the year. As such, I’ve also included some Honourable Mentions.   I didn’t have the chance to write a quick blurb for each album, so you’ll have to take my word that these are definitely the 20 albums that I personally enjoyed the most in 2011.   Each album entry is hyperlinked to a YouTube video of my favorite song from said album.  Enjoy/criticize/laugh/agree: continue reading...

One of the very best bands of the 1980’s, Tears For Fears are almost criminally under-appreciated.  They pushed the boundaries of pop music and wrote hit songs that had something to say.  The message in “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” has never been more relevant and this performance at Knebworth in 1990 is a testament to how good they were in a live setting.  Enjoy: continue reading...

The music world would be a boring and uninspired place without Arcade Fire.  The band has once again teamed up with artist Vincent Morisset to create an interactive music video like you’ve never seen before.  The Suburbs‘ most danceable song has been turned into a video that uses the webcam on your computer and your own personal movement (dance moves!) as the engine behind the movements of the people in the video.  Sounds strange, but it makes sense when you give it a try.  If you don’t have a webcam, then you can click the video to simulate movement.  Click the image below to get to the landing page: continue reading...

barr-brothers-cover.jpg

This is just awesome.  “Beggar In The Morning” has been one of my favorite tunes ever since I first heard it about a year ago when the Barr Brothers debut was independantly released, but I’d been on the lookout for a good live version or a while (I’ve also been trying my damndest to get to a live show, but that’s a whole other story).  Well, that search is over.  This is such a great performance that really allows the viewer/listener to get a sense of the sounds and delicate atmospherics present in the song.  It’s also beautifully sung by a guest musican, Marie-Pierre Arthur, which adds a whole other dimension to the song.  Seeing the band recreate the intro live is such a treat.  This is a band to watch.   Check it out: continue reading...

Plants and Animals have just recently announced a new album titled The End Of That and the first taste is a new single called “Lightshow”.  In a nutshell, it’s everything I like about Plants and Animals.  I suppose that’s both good and bad.  It’s a good song, but at some point I could use a little variation in their sound.  Then again, it’s only a single… and like I said, it’s a good song.  Ok, I’ll stop, just give it a listen, continue reading...

A casual music fan will probably be aware of Spoon, but most likely be unaware of their earliest albums.  Which is fine.  Most bands expand their sound over time and appeal to a broader audience.  Completely normal.  One cool thing is that when someone actually decides that they like a band and wants to dig into the back catalog, there’s usually lots of exciting music to be found from a band still finding its way.  This is very true of Spoon.  Their first two albums sound quite different from their later albums, showcasing tight and explosive guitar driven tunes that owe a lot to bands like Husker Du and Wire.  continue reading...

chara-hit.jpg

In last night’s highly anticipated matchup between the Montreal Canadiens and the Boston Bruins things took an ugly turn when Boston’s monstrous defenceman Zdeno Chara drove Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty’s head into the turn-buckle between the two teams’ benches.  Pacioretty was immediately knocked unconscious and lay face first on the ice for mutiple minutes without any movement.  It was a dirty hit with ambiguous intentions and Chara should be punished by the league.  It will be intersting to see how they deal with this.  As of now the word on Pacioretty is that he was awake and responsive on the way to the hospital and had full movement in all his extremities.  We wish him a speedy and healthy recovery.   continue reading...

The S11 was first unveiled at the Shanghai Auto show earlier this year to an impressed crowd. The car was designed by Shanghai based TJ Innova, the S11 looks fantastic, with Audi and Ferrari design tones slipped into its sleak body, under the platform there is an AWD drivechain pushing power to each corner of the car. From what we hear the S11’s design is completed, and is now at the test stage and will soon be hurtling down the production line in Changchun city, although its not quite clear whose production line they will be using. continue reading...

Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, has gained a reputation for putting up buildings bigger and faster than anywhere else in the world. The city is chock-full of superlatives: the world’s tallest building, the world’s largest mall, and, coming soon, the world’s longest bridge. An oasis of skyscrapers and urban sprawl in the Arabian Desert, this city is determined to do everything with luxurious flair: hotels (Dubai claimed the world’s first seven star hotel), bars, and restaurants with the highest quality service—but be prepared for sky-high prices.

Summer is in full swing down under and the water’s perfect for checking out the Great Barrier Reef. But ideal scuba weather means crowds, so skip the dive spots typically horded by the day-trippers. Hop on a live-aboard dive boat for a multi-day expedition and it’ll just be you, yourself, and the fish among the most beautiful and solitary coral Australia has to offer.

If getting up close to lions, tigers, and rhinos scares you, go on safari in Madagascar, where the harmless wildlife—most famously, lemurs—will greet you with gentle, wide-eyed wonder. And while interaction with animals on most African safaris is best kept at a distance, on this island nation the friendly chameleons, lizards, and lemurs can wander up and down your arms and legs.

This year, be more eco-conscious while traveling. Start by visiting Spice Island Beach Resort in Grenada, an ultra-chic, 66-room, beachfront resort that scores lots of green points. The resort uses energy-saving fluorescent bulbs, solar energy to heat its water, and treats the pool with salt instead of chlorine. They also live by the three R’s, “reduce, reuse, and recycle” as food scraps are composted and leftover guest soaps are ground into detergent for hotel uniforms.

New Orleans’ culture revolves around leisure time: time to slowly simmer Creole stew, time to practice and listen to music, time to celebrate and parade. To enjoy your leisure time Big Easy-style, go to restaurant Cochon for their hearty Cajun menu, or Franky & Johnny for the city’s best po’boys. Then head to Vaughn’s, a locals’ favorite dive bar that serves up authentic Louisiana barbeque along with live jazz and blues.

Interesting:

In October 1963, two cartographers with the Air Force Aeronautical Chart and Information Center saw a strange glow on the moon. Using the 24-inch refractor telescope at Lowell observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, James Greenacre and Edward Barr saw a deep, ruby-red glow coming from the crater Aristarchus. The sighting might have been glowing gas from volcanic activity, and a second sighting in November of that year was verified by Dr. John Hall, Director of the observatory at the time. continue reading...

Millions of people suffer from a biologically based depression during the winter months. Although these people may feel fine or even “better than normal” during the spring and summer, late fall and winter are an entirely different experience. Beyond depressed mood, seasonal affective disorder - or SAD - often brings a loss of interest or pleasure in everyday activities that are normally satisfying, such reading a good book or listening to music. Other common problems are a significant reduction in work productivity (or immense effort to get tasks done), and withdrawal from friends and family that is hard to explain or justify. Some of the symptoms of SAD are very physical. Appetite often changes in marked contrast to spring and summer. People can experience uncontrollable cravings for sweet and starchy foods such as cookies, chocolate, pasta and bread, which causes them to put on a few pounds (or more).

With no where left to turn an employee of Lockheed Martin decided to blow the whistle on his company by posting a video describing unethical practices that he discovered. He claims he discovered ”startling security flaws” and then when no one took him seriously he decided to look to the power of YouTube. He shot a video of himself outlining the problems and then posted it to see if it would find an audience. It has since been picked up by a lot of press, much more so than if he would have attempted normal avenues to get his story out there. I wonder if this will entice more whistleblowers to share their stories…
