Deadpool 2 Outdoes Predecessor In Test Screenings

The sequel is rarely on the same level as the original, although superhero franchises have been known to break this rule. The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 2, and X2 were not only as good as their predecessors, but managed to outdo them in every way. If test screenings are any indication, Deadpool 2 may be another rare sequel that joins this exclusive club.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, this follow-up to the 2016 action/comedy has been screened three times. Audiences were asked to rate the film with boxes marked excellent, very good, good, fair, and poor. The first two screenings received scores of 91 and 97. The third screening in Dallas included two different cuts of the film. Where one of the cuts received a 94, the other scored a near-perfect 98. The highest-rated version is reportedly the one the team will use.

The original Deadpool was a box office sensation, earned universal critical acclaim, and even nabbed a couple Golden Globe nominations. The highest test screening score for the film, however, was 91, meaning its sequel could be even better. The audience at the Dallas screening reportedly sat through the sequel with the same enthusiasm of people “watching the Super Bowl.” These screenings came after Deadpool 2 underwent reshoots in Vancouver that consisted of six days. The first movie notably went though nine days of reshoots.

While this news certainly bodes well for the Deadpool sequel, test screenings aren’t always a reliable reflection of how a film will be received once it actually comes out. So we’ll have to wait until May 18 to see if the Ryan Reynolds film lives up to the hype – plus, plus. For now, at least we have multiple trailers loaded with references, jokes, and plot points to dissect.
